Denise Herrmann
The biathlete has the overall World Cup firmly in her sights

Denise Hermann - Die Biathletin hat den Gesamtweltcup fest im Blick

By 2019 cross-country skier and biathlete Denise Herrmann had made a name for herself in the sports world. At the World Championships in Östersund, Sweden, she became World Champion in the Biathlon Pursuit, and in the Mixed Relay she won silver at the Biathlon World Cup. Denise Herrmann was born on 20 December 1988 in Bad Schlema (Saxony) and started cross-country skiing at an early age. In 2009 she took part in her first World Cup race, and in December 2012 she made it onto the podium for the first time in the team sprint in Quebec. Then, in 2014, came her next big success: winning a bronze with the German relay team at the Olympic Games in Sochi.

More good results followed, then the big surprise: The military athlete dared to make a new start in the biathlon. "I'm looking for a new challenge," she said at the time – and picked up the gun. Thanks to her good cross-country performances she was able to make up for mistakes in the shooting section in the first competitions she took part in and the training at the competitive sports centre in Ruhpolding soon saw her grow in confidence. After her biggest success to date in Östersund, she was grateful in saying: "It was an indescribably beautiful moment to experience this feeling and stand on the top step of the podium. A moment that also shows me that anything is possible if you believe in yourself and follow your dreams." And so her success story continues: in 2019 Denise Herrmann also held her own as the best German biathlete with eighth place in the overall World Cup standings, and in the 2020/2021 season she wants to make it even higher.
