E-BIKE OR PEDELEC?
The term pedelec (made up from pedal/electric/cycle) describes the functional principle of almost all e-bikes available today: they provide pedalling support. Regular pedelecs support up to 25 km/h (15.5 mph) and in legal terms are simply bicycles. With high speed or S-pedelecs pedal support continues until 45 km/h (28 mph). To reach that, however, you have to be working really hard. In many countries these bikes are legally classified as mopeds.
In this case you need to have an insurance sticker on the bike, have a driver's license and wear a helmet. In everyday language all of these bikes are simply called e-bikes. Also because the actual e-bike with throttle grip instead of pedalling support has nearly ceased to exist.
SUITABLE THEFT DETERRENCE
How much do you invest in a decent bike lock? As a rule of thumb, pay 10% of the cost of the new bike for a lock.
