Simon Neumann gives us an exclusive insight into quality assurance at the ABUS site in Rehe in the Westerwald.
He has been part of the team since his training as a toolmaker in 2009 and has learnt the "Made in Germany" approach from the ground up, so to speak. After further training as a mechanical engineering technician, he found his way into quality assurance. Today, Simon Neumann's main tasks are the dimensional and material testing of incoming goods and sample parts, as well as design and management of testing and measuring equipment.
In this interview, he explains how the Rehe site in the Westerwald fills the ABUS quality promise with life every day.
What role does the Rehe site play in the quality assurance process?
Simon Neumann: "In Rehe, we not only produce high-quality security solutions, but also develop and manufacture our own special testing and measuring equipment for our materials and product series. However, the quality assurance process begins with the selection of materials by our design engineers. For individual part deliveries for a product series, we take random samples and check whether the material meets our requirements for durability and robustness. The first prototypes of a product are put through their paces in the in-house test laboratory – for example, with impact, software or climate tests. After a product such as our Bordo folding lock has been fully assembled, the production employee carries out a final check with regard to function and appearance. For example, can the lock be closed properly and does the folding mechanism work smoothly? If quality problems nevertheless occur at the dealer or customer, we go through a clearly defined complaints process in quality assurance – initiated by the customer service centre – which includes close contact with the customer."
How is the quality "Made in Germany" proven?
High quality often stands in contrast to affordable prices, doesn't it?
Simon Neumann: "Not necessarily. High quality does not necessarily lead to higher costs. Our experience shows that customers are prepared to invest in quality. Although the purchase price is then higher, this must also be considered in the context of the long service life of our products. We focus on sustainable quality instead of a short-term throwaway culture. That's why quality assurance is so important at ABUS."
